Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Black Widow!
In general, audiences have had mostly positive things to say about Black Widow since it hit theaters and Disney+ Premier Access last Friday. Regardless, an ambiguous scene shortly before the ending is prompting some debate among viewers. Now, in a new interview with The Wrap, director Cate Shortland is attempting to clear up any confusion.
Shortland specifically addressed the time jump that happens just a few minutes before the credits roll. After blasting the Red Room facility out of the sky, the members of Natasha’s “family” (Yelena Belova, Alexei Shostakov, and Melina Vostokoff), board a chopper with the freed Widows and fly off to parts unknown. But rather than join them, Natasha stays behind to confront Secretary Ross and his approaching forces, who are still hunting Nat for violating the Sokovia Accords in Captain America: Civil War.
Or at least, we think that’s what happens. Before Ross can get any closer, the film cuts to black and picks up two weeks later, with a newly blonde Natasha boarding a Quinjet to break her fellow Avengers out of the Raft, thereby setting up the final scene in Civil War. The sudden flash-forward caused several fans to wonder if Natasha’s brush with Ross was filmed, then cut from the movie. However, according to Shortland, leaving this scene open-ended was always the plan.

“That was intentional, because we wanted to leave the question of how she would get away, rather than allow the audience to get exhausted by another fight,” said Shortland. “We wanted to leave you guys on a high with the question of how did she use her ingenuity? Because she did. And it was probably, I would say, she bargained her way out of that situation. But I don’t know.”
