In addition to its upcoming theatrical slate, Warner Bros. also has a handful of live-action DC films exclusively on HBO Max in the next few years. Now, it looks like the studio’s long-in-the-works Blue Beetle movie might be among those films.
The Los Angeles Times is reporting that WB’s release strategy could change as the studio’s merger with Discovery looms on the horizon. When discussing future HBO Max exclusives, the report mentions several “mid-budget” DC movies that WarnerMedia has earmarked for its now one-year-old streaming service. This includes Batgirl and Blue Beetle. DC’s Batgirl, which recently landed Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah as directors, was previously confirmed as a Max exclusive. But this is the first we’re hearing that the studio was considering a similar model for its Blue Beetle film. Other DC movies expected to go straight to streaming include Zatanna and Static Shock.

Warner Bros. began developing a Blue Beetle film in 2018 when it hired Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer to write the screenplay. This appeared to be the last anyone heard of the project until earlier this year when Angel Manuel Soto was brought on to direct. Jaime Reyes will be Blue Beetle in the movie. That will make it the first DC film to feature a Latino lead. In the meantime, Blue Beetle will also get his own DC Showcase animated short on Batman: The Long Halloween, Part 2’s upcoming Blu-ray release.
