New Evil Dead Movie, Evil Dead Rise, Is Coming To HBO Max

The Evil Dead will rise again, but not necessarily on the big screen. Via Deadline, the previously announced sequel, Evil Dead Rise, is going forward at New Line Cinema as a HBO Max original film. Evil Dead director, Sam Raimi, and Bruce Campbell will executive produce the project. However, Campbell will not reprise his role as Ash Williams. Campbell retired from the role after Ash vs. Evil Dead was cancelled by STARZ.

Lee Cronin will direct Evil Dead Rise, which takes the horror outside of the woods and into the city. Alyssa Sutherland (Vikings) and Lily Sullivan (Picnic At Hanging Rock) have also signed on to star in the film as a pair of estranged sisters. Regardless of their issues with each other, the sisters will be menaced “by the rise of flesh-possessing demons.” The sisters will also “face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.”

Additionally, Deadline’s report states that Evil Dead Rise will not get a domestic theatrical release. However, it may come to theaters in countries without HBO Max.

“I’m thrilled to bring Evil Dead back to its original home at New Line 40 years after the release of the first film,” said Raimi in a statement. “The company’s history as pioneers of horror speaks for itself. I’m equally excited to be working with Lee Cronin, whose gifts as a storyteller make him the ideal filmmaker to continue the enduring legacy of the franchise.”

Evil Dead Rise will begin production in New Zealand. Original producer, Robert Tapert, will also executive produce the sequel.
