Jason Momoa Discusses His Role in Crafting Aquaman 2’s Story

In just a few months, Jason Momoa will slip back into Arthur Curry’s Atlantean armor to start work on Aquaman 2. But this time, he’s not just playing the hero onscreen. Momoa’s love for the character runs so deep that he’s come up with his own ideas for Arthur’s future adventures. And fans will get to see some of those ideas come to life when the sequel arrives next year.

Shortly after the first Aquaman premiered in 2018, Momoa claimed that he pitched his own vision for the sequel to Warner Bros. execs and they “loved” it. But during a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show (via Heroic Hollywood), he shared new details about the nature of his role in Aquaman 2’s creative process. Apparently, Momoa and another writer cooked up the basic story outline for the film before handing it off to James Wan and returning screenwriter David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick.

“After we ended the first one, I went in with my writing partner and we dreamed up the second one and we went in and pitched the idea,” said Momoa. “And the best thing I can give you is that I love it so much that I participated in the writing of it. And so, we did the first treatment and then James and our original writer David finished it off and all of our hearts are in it. Instead of just, like, getting a script and doing that, like, you are 100% being encouraged by your director and co-writers. So that’s exciting for me and I’m excited to go over there. I leave in July and we start filming.”

There’s still a lot we don’t know about Warner Bros.’ plans for Aquaman 2, which once again has Wan sitting in the director’s chair. Last month, the filmmakers began the casting process by adding Pilou Asbaek in a supporting role. The sequel will also feature the return of Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Orm, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as David Kane/Black Manta.

Aquaman 2 will hit theaters on December 16, 2022.
