Mark Strong Says He Won’t Be Back For Shazam!: Fury of the Gods

In the post-credits scene of Shazam!, Mark Strong’s Dr. Thaddeus Sivana was approached by Mr. Mind about a potential alliance. Regardless of his defeat at the hands of the Shazam family, it seemed to set up Sivana’s return in the upcoming sequel, Shazam!: Fury of the Gods. However, in a new interview with Den of Geek, Strong says that he won’t be back in the next film.

“I literally spoke to the producer last night, because I saw that Zach Levi tweeted that they’re about to start shooting in Atlanta,” noted Strong. “Doctor Sivana isn’t in Shazam! 2. What’s happened is, I think Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu and perhaps someone else — they’ve got some female villains in. And to be honest with you, I’m very happy to take a back seat to some female villains and let them have a go, because judging by the work that Emma Thompson and Emma Stone have done in Cruella, it’s about time.”

Strong brought up Cruella because he has a role in the film. Mirren and Liu were cast earlier this year as Hespera and Kalypso, the daughters of Atlas. Together, the sisters will take on Billy Batson and his super-powered foster family.

But the fact that Strong remains in touch with the producers of Fury of the Gods suggests that he could still return in a later sequel. Strong also also acknowledged that when he suggested “[Sivana’s] still got unfinished business with Mister Mind.”

Shazam!: Fury of the Gods hits theaters on June 2, 2023.
