Colin Trevorrow Feared He Couldn’t Complete Jurassic World: Dominion

Director Colin Trevorrow was inches away from not being able to complete Jurassic World: Dominion. As with every movie that was in production at the time, the sixth installment in the franchise has been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. In March 2020, the pandemic shut everything down on the Dominion set just a month after the cameras started rolling. Trevorrow found out officially that they were going to shut down about three hours before they wrapped. After a brief phone call with Universal, Trevorrow and the producers agreed to shut everything down after finishing his shoot day.

“We captured it and then we went home for three months,” Trevorrow said while talking with Empire. “And that day is in the movie. We didn’t go back and reshoot it.”

In July, Dominion was the first major studio movie to resume production after the COVID-19 outbreak. Universal Pictures had to come up with a safety plan to resume filming at Pinewood Studios. Even so, they suffered another halt in October due to the increase of positive cases on the set.

“The scariest moment was [in late October] when we just had a couple of weeks left and the cases were rising exponentially,” he says. “Because we had the crew that we did and the actors were always on set, we were able to accelerate what we were doing. But we definitely had a fear that we might have a movie that was nine-tenths finished and remain that way.”

Ultimately, filming ended in November, with a virus-proofing the set cost between $6-8 million. According to the producers’ plans, Jurassic World: Dominion will hit theaters on June 10, 2022.
