Joe Cornish Will Adapt Mark Millar’s Starlight For 20th Century Studios

With less than a month to go until Jupiter’s Legacy hits Netflix, 20th Century Studios has set its sights on another Mark Millar property. According to Deadline, the studio has tapped Joe Cornish to write and direct a film based on Millar’s Starlight comic book series.

Millar and artist Goran Parlov launched Starlight through Image Comics in 2014. The series centered on Duke McQueen, a former space hero who once averted a catastrophe that threatened the entire universe, but nobody on Earth believed his stories. Forty years later, he lives a quiet life as a widower with adult children. But when a visitor from another world calls on him for help, he sets off on one last adventure.

Before they became a Disney subsidiary, 20th Century Studios originally picked up the movie rights to Starlight several months before the first issue came out (when they were still known as 20th Century Fox). The studio later recruited Rogue One writer Gary Whitta to pen the screenplay. However, this iteration of the project ultimately fell through. Last year, Millar blamed this speedbump on a rights issue with Netflix, which owns his entire Millarworld catalog. But if the film is moving forward at 20th Century, then the issue has presumably been resolved.

Cornish made his feature directorial debut with Attack the Block in 2011. Additionally, he worked with Edgar Wright on the script for Marvel’s Ant-Man and also co-wrote The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn with Wright and Steven Moffat. Cornish’s last directorial effort was The Kid Who Would Be King, which hit theaters in 2019.

Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg is producing Starlight through his Genre Films banner alongside Audrey Chon. Nira Park is also onboard as a producer. 20th Century Studios still hasn’t set a release date for the film.
