Cary Fukunaga Will Direct Legendary’s Tokyo Ghost Adaptation

No Time to Die director Cary Fukunaga has set his sights on one of Image Comics’ best-selling titles for his next big film project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fukunaga has signed on to helm an adaptation of Rick Remender and Sean Murphy’s Tokyo Ghost.

Remender and Murphy launched Tokyo Ghost in 2015. The series imagines a future where humanity’s addiction to technology has run rampant. The story primarily follows Led Dent and Debbie Decay, two peace officers working in the Isles of Los Angeles. Eventually, the pair are given a new job patrolling The Garden Nation of Tokyo, which has become the last tech-free country on Earth. This series has been on hiatus ever since the 10th issue hit comic shops in 2016. However, Remender and Murphy have teased that more stories are on the way.

Legendary is developing the movie with Remender himself also writing the screenplay. Previously, Remender tried his hand at the adaptation game as co-showrunner of SYFY’s short-lived Deadly Class series, based on the comic he co-created with artist Wes Craig. Last year, Seth Rogen and Shazam! director David F. Sandberg began developing another Remender property, Fear Agent, for Amazon.

Fukunaga won an Emmy in 2014 for his directorial work on the first season of HBO’s True Detective. He also helmed all 10 episodes of Netflix’s 2018 miniseries Maniac. His other big-screen credits include Beasts of No Nation and the 2011 adaptation of Jane Eyre. Fukunaga is also producing Tokyo Ghost through his Parliament of Owls banner alongside Hayden Lautenbach and Silk Mass’ Jon Silk.
