It appears that 2021 is going to be Zack Snyder‘s year. After taking a sabbatical from directing, the director will have two big streaming movies within two months. While many fans are waiting for his cut of Justice League, which will hit HBO Max in March, there is a certain curiosity for Snyder’s return to zombie movies. His long-in-development Army of the Dead has an official release date, as the director announced on his socials. The film will hit Netflix on May 21.

Fans can expect more promotional material in the next few days, including an upcoming teaser. Shortly after the movie will hit the streaming service, Titan Books is publishing a book called Army of the Dead: The Making of the Film about what happened behind the scenes of the film.

The story was conceived by Snyder and written by Joby Harold and Shay Hatten. It takes place during a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas and follows a man who assembles a group of mercenaries to take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantined zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted. The cast of Army of the Dead stars Dave Bautista, who recently revealed that he agreed to work on this one after discovering the different layers to the story. Additionally, the cast features Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Theo Rossi, Garret Dillahunt, Raül Castillo, as well as Chris D’Elia, and Ana de la Reguera.
Beyond that, Netflix appears interested in expanding the franchise. Zack Snyder’s forthcoming zombie movie is getting a prequel in addition to an anime series, with both projects penned by Hatten. The anime series goes by Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, and it will focus on the origin story of Bautista’s Scott Ward, the character who puts the whole story in motion. With the Army of the Dead release date, the streaming service has also debuted an official poster for the movie. together with a caption that reads, “Survivors take all.” You can take a better look at it here below.
