Later this year, Warner Bros. Animation will release Batman: The Long Halloween, a two-part adaptation of Jeph Loeb and artist Tim Sale’s acclaimed limited series of the same name. The series has been frequently hailed as one of the best Batman stories ever told. It’s also one of the darkest, and fans are undoubtedly curious to see if the movie will be able to match this tone. Fortunately, it looks like the film’s producers are adhering pretty close. According to Bloody Disgusting, Batman: The Long Halloween – Part One has been rated PG-13.
Apparently, the film received this rating for “violence, bloody images, language, and some smoking.” This seems fitting, given the nature of the original storyline. Loeb and Sale collaborated on 13 issues of The Long Halloween, which were published between 1996 and 1997. Picking up where Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One left off, the series follows a young Batman in pursuit of a serial killer known as Holiday. The story also revamped Two-Face’s origin and expanded on Harvey Dent’s relationship with Batman and James Gordon.

PG-13 ratings are technically par the course for most of DC’s animated films. However, some have been bold enough to land R-ratings over the years, including Batman: The Killing Joke and the recently-released Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. Apart from The Long Halloween, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is also planning to release another animated DC movie, Justice Society: World War II later this year.
Batman: The Long Halloween – Part One will hit stores this summer. Part Two will arrive in the fall.
