Disney Pushes Matthew Vaughn’s The King’s Man To August

Although coronavirus vaccines have started to roll out, a return to normal is still a ways off, especially when it comes to movie theaters. Now, we can add another upcoming blockbuster to the list of films forced to postpone their release dates this week. According to Variety, The King’s Man isn’t going to make its March 12 premiere. Instead, 20th Century Studios will debut the film on August 20.

Variety also notes that Matthew Vaughn’s prequel to his Kingsman series was the “lone studio film” still targeting an early 2021 release window. Now that it’s moved to summer, the winter box office season has essentially been abandoned. The movie is set during World War I and explores the origins of the Kingsman organization. Ralph Fiennes leads an ensemble cast that also includes Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans, Djimon Hounsou, and Daniel Brühl.

The King’s Man began production before Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox was finalized in 2019. The movie was originally going to hit theaters in November 2019. But even before COVID-19 struck, the studio kept shuffling its release date, first to February 2020, then to last September. More recently, the film was moved to February 2021 before Disney settled on its previous March release date.

Additionally, Disney has announced that several other upcoming films are changing dates as well. But surprisingly, the latest report makes no mention of their plans for Black Widow. The first film in Marvel’s Phase Four slate is still holding onto its May 7 premiere. Regardless, rumors continue to swirl about a possible switch.
