Colin Trevorrow Says Dominion Ties All Jurassic World Films Together

Now that Jurassic World: Dominion has wrapped filming, we have a long road ahead of us before it hits theaters. Until that happens, most of us will spend that time speculating on the nature of the sequel. Fans have a lot of questions about how the new film relates to the original Jurassic Park trilogy. And while speaking with Entertainment Weekly, director Colin Trevorrow offered a few hints.

“To me, [Dominion] is a culmination of one story that’s been told,” said Trevorrow. “When you got to the end of the Jurassic Park trilogy, it may not have been as clear in what the complete story of those three movies was because they were a bit more episodic in the way that they were approached. But this trilogy is not that way. It’s very much a serialized story.”

What was important for me was, when you watch Dominion, you really feel like you are learning how much of a story that first set of movies was and how everything that happened in those movies actually informs what ultimately is able to happen in this. If [fans] are going to be presented with six Jurassic Park movies… you hope they are going to get to feel like they watch one long story.”

Last year, Trevorrow also helped expand the Jurassic franchise’s reach to TV with Netflix’s Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous animated series. Set during the events of Jurassic World, the show’s first season followed a group of pre-teens along on their own perilous attempts to get off Isla Nublar after the Indominus Rex escapes captivity. Trevorrow, who executive produces the series, has previously said the writers will have more creative freedom in season 2, which will fill in part of the three-year gap between Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. However, he also teased that we might see a few references to Dominion when the new episodes premiere.

“It’s important to me…to recognize [Camp Cretaceous] as clearly its own story and its own show,” added Trevorrow. “But this season — and if we’re granted further opportunities to tell the story that we have [in Season 3] — will keep weaving into the larger story and really inform some things, even in Dominion that will connect to discoveries made that I’m really excited about.”

Jurassic World: Dominion opens on June 10, 2022. Meanwhile, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous season 2 premieres Friday, January 22 on Netflix.
