WB Releases Wonder Woman 1984 IMAX Featurette, New Character Posters

Not many people will be watching Wonder Woman 1984 on the big screen later this month. Regardless, this isn’t stopping IMAX from showing fans how select scenes were filmed with their high-resolution cameras. A new featurette for the highly-anticipated DC sequel has just made its way online. The video shows director Patty Jenkins and other crew members discussing the benefits of shooting the film this way.

As it turns out, the first IMAX scene comes right at the film’s beginning, with a flashback to Diana’s childhood as the young Amazon warrior-in-training competes in an Olympic-type competition on Themyscira. Jenkins also explained that it was “important” for her to shoot the sequel predominately on conventional film. However, certain action sequences demanded a little something extra, and IMAX was able to provide it.

“The footage that you get back from [IMAX] is stunning,” said Jenkins. “It’s like nothing else.”

“We really wanted the film to have a sense of spectacle,” added producer Charles Roven. “And IMAX is just one of the most incredibly immersive mediums in the film arena.”

These interviews were likely filmed before COVID-19 struck, when the filmmakers weren’t even considering the possibility of a direct-to-streaming release. Unfortunately, movie theaters remain on life support as the pandemic continues to ravage the country. Hopefully the sequel’s IMAX scenes translate reasonably well in 4K.

Additionally, Warner Bros. (via /Film) has released four new character posters for Wonder Woman 1984 ahead of its premiere in a few short weeks. Two of the posters spotlight Gal Gadot’s Diana and Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor. Plus, the sequel’s villainous pairing of Kristen Wiig’s Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah and Pedro Pascal’s Maxwell Lord get their own one-sheets as well. You can view the posters in the gallery below.

Wonder Woman 1984 hits theaters and HBO Max on December 25.
