In the comic book realm, Professor Charles Xavier created The New Mutants as the next generation of the X-Men. But when and if the film finally hits theaters, it’s connections to the X-Men will be negligible. Director Josh Boone has previously shared his intent to feature James McAvoy’s Xavier and Alexandra Shipp’s Storm in The New Mutants. Now, a new interview with Boone on /Film has shed more light on how they would have fit in the film.
“[The studio] really pushed us to keep it separate from X-Men stuff, even though it’s set in the X-Men universe,” recalled Boone. “We had early drafts that were supposed to be in the same timeline as [X-Men: Apocalypse], so it was originally going to be set in the ’80s. Originally, Professor X and Storm were in it, and Storm very much played the Alice Braga role.”
“Over the course of months, a new studio head came in, they said they didn’t want any X-Men movies to take place in the past anymore,” added Boone. “As if that was the reason that Apocalypse was bad. [laughs]”

Boone went on to note that the film does mention “Professor X and those things, but it doesn’t have cameos from anyone or anything like that.” He also said that the script was rewritten so that it is no longer set in a specific time period.
The New Mutants will hit theaters on August 28, barring any further delays.
