Charlize Theron has appeared in some action-packed movies, including Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde, and The Fate of the Furious. Next month, Theron will add another high-octane adventure to her resume. Vanity Fair has premiered a handful of new images of Theron and her castmates in Netflix’s The Old Guard, which is based on Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez’s Image comic book series. You can check them out for yourself via Instagram below.
The film stars Theron as Andromache of Scythia (a.k.a. “Andy”), a warrior who has lived for thousands of years. She also leads a team of fellow immortals who spend their days hunting down the worst that humanity has to offer. Unfortunately, these activities have taken a toll on Andy, and she begins to question her role in history.

“It was important to feel the weight of thousands and thousands of years on her,” said Theron. “The worst part for her is just feeling like she’s not doing anything. So what is the point, you know? She’s lost faith, not just in herself but in humanity. I think a lot of people can relate to that at this moment in time. We go through periods in life where we just look at the world and go, Oh, my God… You just feel like you’re pushing a rock up a mountain.”
Gina Prince-Bythewood is directing The Old Guard from a screenplay written by Rucka himself. Despite the film’s fantastical premise, it was important to Prince-Bythewood to make the characters feel as grounded as possible. That meant avoiding the influence of mainstream superhero movies.
“I never wanted any moment to take an audience out of the fact that these could be real people,” said Prince-Bythewood. “This is somebody that can get stabbed and walk away, but it’s going to hurt.… This is a woman alive 6,000 years, and we come to her at the point where she wants it over.”
The Old Guard will debut on Netflix on July 10.
