Birds of Prey & The Invisible Man Get Early Digital Releases

After its disapproving opening weekendBirds of Prey was already facing an uphill battle at the domestic box office. Last weekend, Birds of Prey fell out of the top 10 as coronavirus fears kept viewers at home. However, Warner Bros. has decided to give Birds of Prey a renewed spotlight via an early digital release.

According to Deadline, Birds of Prey will hit digital outlets like Amazon and iTunes on Tuesday, March 24. The move came just a few hours after BOP director Cathy Yan tweeted that she was in favor of giving the film an early digital release.

Additionally, Universal Pictures will release The Invisible Man, The Hunt, and Emma on digital formats as soon as this Friday, March 20. Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour will also keep its original Friday, April 10 date for its digital release.

Why are Universal and Warner Bros. shortening the length between theatrical and digital releases? Because most of the nation’s theaters are closed until further notice. AMC, one of the largest theater chains in the country, has already closed its doors for six-to-twelve weeks. Going to digital early may give the studios a better shot at making money with the films. However, it’s  unlikely that Disney will do the same for Mulan, Black Widow, or Onward. Under ordinary circumstances, those films would have a shot at $1 billion worldwide. And that’s money that Pixar, Disney, and Marvel won’t leave that money on the table. It’s more likely that those films will be delayed to the fall or later this summer.
