Fans continue to wait for Marvel to officially announce Sam Raimi’s involvement with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Scott Derrickson vacated the director’s chair last month over “creative differences.” Derrickson remains on board as an executive producer. But surprisingly, it sounds like Derrickson and co-writer C. Robert Cargill didn’t get very far into the screenwriting process. In fact, according to Cargill himself, the pair never had the chance to turn in their own draft. You can read what Cargill had to say via Twitter below.
Since it keeps coming up in news stories, it’s worth noting that Scott and I never had the opportunity to write a draft of MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS, so whatever they are working with now isn’t derivative of our work.
I am of course very excited to see where they take Stephen next.

Cargill previously worked on the script for the original Doctor Strange with Derrickson and Jon Spaihts. As early as 2018, Cargill even revealed that they were planning to use Nightmare as the next villain. Unfortunately, it seems like Marvel wasn’t all that interested in their ideas, because they hired Jade Bartlett to write the script last October. And just last week, it was reported that Loki showrunner Michael Waldron will take his own pass at the script.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on May 7, 2021. It will also begin filming this May.
