Hadrian’s Wall is the latest Image Comics staple to pique Hollywood’s interest. According to CBR, the series’ writer and co-creator, Kyle Higgins, will write and direct a film adaptation for indie studio Gunpowder & Sky. The film marks Higgins’ feature directorial debut and will release through Gunpowder & Sky’s DUST imprint.
“I was blown away by the filmmaker-friendly team at Gunpowder & Sky and I’m grateful to be making my first feature with them,” said Higgins. “It was immediately clear how passionate they are and we share the same vision for how to bring Hadrian’s Wall to the big screen. The best murder mysteries are vehicles for character study, and at its core, this is a story about relationships, set in one of the most isolated places in the universe. I think fans of the book will be as thrilled as I am.”
Higgins conceived the original eight-issue series with co-writer Alec Siegel and artist Rod Reis in 2016. Set 100 years in the future, the book centers on Simon Moore, a pill-popping detective. Following the mysterious death of an astronaut onboard the titular spacecraft, Simon is tasked with investigating the murder. While solving this cosmic whodunit, Simon must also avoid exacerbating an interstellar Cold War between Earth and and a colony of humans settled in the far reaches of space.

“Although Hadrian’s Wall takes place a century into the future, the crew of the space vessel navigates both a murder mystery and a civil war in a world smartly mirroring our present day,” Gunpowder & Sky SVP of Development and Production Cody Zwieg said in a statement. “Higgins turned the classic whodunit tale on its head and shot it into space. This is exactly the kind of film we like to put out at DUST and Gunpowder & Sky.”
It’s rare for a comic creator to helm a film based on his own work, but not completely unheard of. Frank Miller famously co-directed both Sin City films with Robert Rodriguez in 2005 and 2014. Additionally, Todd McFarlane is still planning on directing a new Spawn movie with Jamie Foxx in the title role. However, it’s been a while since we heard about anything happening with that project.
