Warning: There are major spoilers ahead for Captain Marvel!
Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel introduced fans to Carol Danvers and set the stage for her return in Avengers: Endgame. However, there was a point where the ending of the film almost left Carol without a purpose. In an interview with Collider, the film’s editor, Debbie Berman, explained how things changed with the conclusion.
“It used to end with Carol flying off into space alone, and I found that a bit jarring,” said Berman. “Like, where exactly [was] she going? And what was she doing? It felt like we needed a stronger visual to assert a more specific justification for her leaving and disappearing for so many years.”
“So we added Talos and his family in their spaceship waiting for her, and they all fly off together,” continued Berman. “It gave her more of a sense of purpose and made it easier to believe that she left her newfound life on Earth because she was with a friend we knew she cared about…[It] gave more resonance and closure to her final moments in the film.”

That ending may have worked out better for Carol in the long run. In the mid-credits teaser, Carol finally answers the emergency page from Nick Fury after Thanos wiped out, which turns him into dust shortly thereafter. That marks the first time that Carol has shared the screen with the other Avengers.
We’ll see that story play out in Avengers: Endgame when it arrives on April 26. In the meantime, Captain Marvel is in theaters now.
