Warner Bros. has released a new featurette spotlighting the characters of Shazam! less than two months before its theatrical release. Although there isn’t an abundance of new footage, the video notably features interviews with cast members Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, and Jack Dylan Grazer.
Although he plays the title character, Levi was able to shed some light on his teenaged alter-ego, Angel’s Billy Batson. “He’s a really good kid who wants the best, who sticks up for the other kid,” Levi explained. “And because he is pure of heart, he’s transported to this wizard who endows him with this power of Shazam.”

The “other kid” in this case is the likewise alliteratively named Freddy Freeman, played by Grazer, who describes his character as a “superhero fanatic.” And we’ve seen from the trailers, we can expect plenty of super-powered hijinks to ensue once Billy undergoes his transformation. “I feel like any kid who gains the power of being an adult, they’re gonna be like ‘We should do things that only adults can do, duh!” Grazer insisted.
Levi echoed the young actors’ remarks. “Shazam is one of very few superhero characters that is genuinely stoked to be a superhero,” he said. “More often than not, you’ve got a character who is begrudgingly pulled into this, and everybody needs them, and they’re like ‘Oh, I have to save the world again.’ Billy Batson is stoked.” Levi also could barely contain his own enthusiasm about finally getting to play a superhero. “I just get to show up on set and be like ‘I get to do this? I get to fly around and fight bad guys?’”
Shazam! flies into theaters on April 5. You can check out the new featurette below, then tell us what you think in the comment section!
