Stellan Skarsgard is the Villain in Legendary’s Dune Reboot

The cast and crew of Legendary Entertainment’s Dune reboot continues to take shape. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Stellan Skarsgard has signed on to portray Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, a villainous character from Frank Herbert’s series of books.

In the Dune universe, Harkonnen’s family has been in conflict with the Atreides clan for 10,000 years. The first novel begins with House Atreides in control of the spice-mining operation on the desert planet Arrakis. However, this turns out to be nothing more than a set-up. With help from the galaxy’s corrupt emperor, Baron Harkonnen plots an attack nearly wipes out the Atreides family before installing himself as Arrakis’ ruler.

Kenneth McMillan played Harkonnen in David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation of Dune. However, Ian McNeice took over the role for the pair of Syfy miniseries that aired in 2000 and 2003, respectively.

Denis Villeneuve is directing the reboot from a script co-written by Villeneuve, Eric Roth, and Jon Spaihts. Timothée  Chalamet is headlining the movie as Paul Atreides and Rebecca Ferguson is playing his mother, Lady Jessica. Dave Bautista joined the film earlier this week as “the sadistic nephew of a Baron who oversees Arrakis.” This new report suggests that Bautista is playing Skarsgard’s nephew in the film. IndieWire also announced today that Joe Walker has joined the project as its editor. Walker previously collaborated with Villeneuve on Sicario, Arrival, and Blade Runner 2049.
