Girl in the Spider’s Web Writer to Script Battlestar Galctica Film

The Cylons are returning to Earth in a new Battlestar Galactica film from director Francis Lawrence. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal’s reboot of the 1978 television series is finally coming to the big screen. To rewrite the script, the studio has enlisted The Girl in the Spider’s Web scribe Jay Basu.

Battlestar Galactica is a science fiction story that follows a civilization of humans living on twelve colonies in a distant galaxy. These colonies battled a cybernetic race of beings known as the Cylons. After offering peace to the humans, the Cylons attacked. Humanity fled to the Battlestar Galactica, the only vessel to survive the onslaught. Under the leadership of Commander Adama, they go in search of the fabled colony known as Earth.

Battlestar Galactica‘s most recent revival, the 2003 miniseries, led to a four-season television show on SyFy. That series was very successful and led to the spinoff, Caprica. The series also resulted in several made-for-TV movies. Universal’s adaptation has been in the works since 2009. Lawrence (The Hunger Games) joined the project earlier this year along with Westworld showrunner Lisa Joy, who wrote the original draft of the script. Dylan Clark and Michael De Luca are co-producing the film through their namesake companies. Jay Basu is currently penning the Labyrinth sequel script for TriStar Pictures. No cast or other information is currently available for the film.

Battlestar Galactica‘s latest revival introduced the classic series to brand new audiences. A reboot could make Universal a force to be reckoned with in the science fiction genre. It could potentially give them an edge against Paramount’s Star Trek and Disney’s Star Wars series. Time will tell if the new franchise will prove to be just as successful.
