Mary Jane Watson Speaks in a New Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Promo

Later this month, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse will bring Miles Morales to the big screen. Of course, Peter Parker will also be in the film, alongside several other alternate Spider-Men and Spider-Women. ComicBook.com has posted a new promo that reintroduces Peter’s longtime significant other, Mary Jane Watson. Within the clip, Mary Jane (Zoë Kravitz) offers a few words of encouragement for the assembled crowd, almost all of whom are wearing Spider-Man masks.

ComicBook speculates that this may be a memorial service for the Peter Parker of Miles’ world. That’s probably awkward for the alternate Peter, because it’s almost like he’s attending his own funeral. However, Mary Jane may never even run into the alternate Peter. But that would feel like a missed opportunity for drama and heartbreak.

Peter’s death in Miles’ world reflects their shared history in the Ultimate Marvel Universe. That line of comics re-imagined Peter as a teenager in the 21st century, but he was killed off in a battle with the Sinister Six. Peter’s legacy lived on through Miles, who became the second Spider-Man as a tribute to him. Currently, Miles and Peter are both Spider-Man in the mainstream Marvel Universe, with Peter acting as a mentor to Miles.

Shameik Moore stars in the film as Miles Morales with Jake Johnson as Peter Parker. Hailee Steinfeld is voicing Gwen Stacy / Spider-Gwen, with John Mulaney as Spider-Ham, Kimiko Glenn as Peni Parker, and Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man Noir. Liev Schreiber will portray Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of crime and the film’s primary villain.
