Major DC Easter Eggs & Reveals From Lanterns Trailer Breakdown

After a long wait, DC Studios finally released a teaser trailer for its upcoming HBO show, Lanterns. The teaser packed in a lot of information while also placing subtle Easter eggs that offer a broader perspective on where the story takes place in the DCU.

Here’s a breakdown of the Lanterns’ trailer.

All major easter eggs and reveals in new Lanterns trailer

A Green Lantern in training

The trailer opens with John Stewart arguing with Hal Jordan about training for two months and yet not having the ring. It appears their argument reaches a point that prompts Hal to leave his ring on the dashboard and jump out of the car as the vehicle drops off a cliff. John survives the incident after seemingly having used the ring.

John’s a “substitute teacher”

Hal calls John a “substitute teacher.” While John was originally an architect in the comics, he also served as a mentor for other Green Lanterns, substituting for Hal in case of emergencies.

Green Lantern suit

The trailer offers a brief look at Green Lantern’s suit. The suit is often formed by the ring’s power rather than a physical garment, so it would be interesting to see to whom this suit really belongs. It is a green-and-yellow suit with the lantern symbol on the chest.

An unknown enemy

Hal and John arrive at a small town and enter the city hall, where the town sheriff and residents are gathered. Sheriff Kerry, played by Kelly Macdonald, later warns Hal about poking his nose in her town’s business. But the destruction around the town hints that she could be out of her depths.

Major conflicts

There’s tension between the Lanterns themselves. John believes he can protect people better than Hal can, but Hal believes otherwise. The two have famously had a rocky relationship during their early days in the comics. They eventually develop a stronger bond.

Furthermore, they face other threats in the Lanterns trailer, like being chased and shot at by masked people. Hal even faces Antaan, played by Paul Ben-Victor. While Antaan is actually an extraterrestrial with vengeance against the Lanterns, he is in human form here. Perhaps the show is taking a different approach to the character? Meanwhile, Sinestro, played by Ulrich Thomsen, is also set to appear in the show.

Green Lanterns’ powers

Neither Hal nor Jordan is in their suits, but at one point, Hal flies away in his civil outfit. The very next scene shows John holding the Power Battery. It features a unique design, different from the source materials.

Squirrel Lantern

In the closing moments of the trailer, Hal talks about being the only human Green Lantern. He says that one of the Lanterns is a squirrel, which could be a nod to Ch’p.

On the other hand, as already seen in Superman, Guy Gardner is a human with Green Lantern powers. Interestingly, Guy is part alien due to his Vuldarian heritage. Either the show has already acknowledged Guy’s alien heritage, or Hal just doesn’t like him enough to consider him a human. Which could also be a nod to their rivalry in comics.
