If you guessed that McFarlane Toys would kick off their new crowdfunding site, dubbed “Drawing Board,” with a Spawn figure, surprise! They’re aiming at ’80s collectors on this one, with exclusive new vehicles in the Super Powers collection. This DC figure line has built on the ’80s Kenner Collection with figures and variants that the company never got around to. They may lack the “Power Action” features, but they scale correctly and build out that universe.
The Powers of Friend-Ships
The crowdfunded items will be a Bat-Multicraft with two seats and a retractable exhaust flame and Black Manta’s Sea Saucer with two shark drones. The crowdfund program also includes exclusive colorways for Batman, Robin, Aquaman, and Black Manta. Fans can pledge at any number of tiers. The Sea Saucer by itself is $20, while the Bat-Multicraft is $35. The figures, in sets of two, add an additional $15. Options also exist to pledge for everything, as well as higher tiers with an exclusive T-shirt or Todd McFarlane autographed items.
The project has three weeks to reach a $600,000 goal; as of this writing, it’s one percent of the way there. If you want one, get it before Aug 7th.
No doubt some fans would have preferred something huge like the unreleased Darkseid fortress playset that never made it to market from Kenner, but have patience. McFarlane Toys are clearly testing their platform by starting small, and Super Powers tends to appeal mostly to diehard fans. If they think they can get away with HasLab-sized items, they won’t miss the chance to make money on that score.
Super Powers items also tend to accrue in value, and if made, these will be among the rarest items in the line. Get in now if you suspect you might regret it later. For crowdfunded items, these are remarkably affordable.
