Universal Studios Shares the First Look at Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge

The launch of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood is still roughly a year away. But the park is giving us an early look at one of its star attractions. Universal has just released a video previewing Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, an immersive experience based on Nintendo’s long-running video game franchise.

A similar ride, Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge currently exists at Universal Studios Japan, which opened over a year ago. So presumably, the new attraction will feature the same augmented reality tech that simulates hazards in the road just like games that inspired it. Riders will navigate their way across several famous Mario Kart courses lined with piranha plants and warp pipes before encountering Bowser himself.

The ride is notably housed inside the dark basement of Bowser’s Castle. According to a press release (via Deadline), guests will race alongside members of Team Mario, which also includes Luigi and Princess Peach, to win the coveted Golden Cup, collecting coins and power-ups along the way to defeat Team Bowser and his minions. Additionally, the ride is “repeatable,” meaning each race can lead to a variety of different outcomes. The park will also employ the use of Power-Up Bands, which are integrated into the Bowser’s Challenge experience.

Super Nintendo World will open at Universal Studios Hollywood in early 2023.
