Storm Collectibles’ Newest Mortal Kombat Figure Makes Heads Explode

Raiden wins! Mortal Kombat‘s god of thunder and lightning, protector of the Earthrealm, sometimes known as “Rayden” on home systems, just got a new toy. A mainstay of the series since the original arcade game, Raiden is known for predominantly white outfits, a wide hat, and being inspired by the three storms of John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China. His skills include teleportation, flying tackles, and massive electrocutions.

Storm Collectibles covers the entire Mortal Kombat series with their toy license. And with Raiden, they’ve opted for his look in the second game. More colorful than his original basic white look, it adds a blue tunic. To keep some of the bloodstains out of his lighter garments, we assume.

Let’s let Storm tell it. “Ageless and wise beyond measure, he leads Earthrealm’s morals in the endless battle against the forces of darkness. When Shao Kahn, Emperor of Outworld, threatened to merge his realm with Earthrealm, an overwhelmed Raiden implored the Elder Gods to give Earthrealm a fighting chance. Thus the Mortal Kombat tournament was created. For millennia Shao Kahn has been kept at bay, but nine consecutive losses to Goro have eroded hope that Earthrealm can be saved. Determined to prevent Armageddon, Raiden tirelessly quests to find a champion worthy of Mortal Kombat.”

All that, and Christopher Lambert played him in a movie too. (As did James Remar, in the only memorable part of the sequel.) The figure, however, sports his own distinct likeness, with three separate facial expressions. Best of all, though, this Raiden comes with a head-splosion that can be put on another MK figure to depict his Fatality move. Removable lightning bolts help keep the effect even more dramatic. In keeping with Storm tradition, there’s even another figure teased in the promo pics. Here it’s a variant Sub-Zero with clear blue ice arms.

Preorder Raiden directly from Storm or via online retailers for $70. Even if he doesn’t blow your mind, he’ll do it to one of your other figures.
