Superhero Hype’s Best Amazon Movie and DVD Deals for Nov 12

With the nearest open movie theaters hard to find, many fans look to home entertainment more than ever. If the kids are quarantined at home also, purchases, rather than rentals, start to look better and better for the inevitable repeat viewings. But with so many, it’s hard to know where to begin or what to afford. In this ongoing series, Superhero Hype takes a look at some of the better deals Amazon.com has running as of publication time. Please note that all deals are subject to change or sell out at any time based on supply and demand. These are the deals for Nov 12.

The Mummy Ultimate Trilogy (4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray)

$32.99

Tom who? Brendan Fraser, and only Brendan Fraser, should always take the lead as mummy fighter extraordinaire. Plus: see Dwayne Johnson walk through the desert and fall down in his first feature role, only to be resurrected as a weird CG effect! And Jet Li too!

Friday the 13th Collection [Blu-ray]

$129.97

Jason Voorhees is like the anti-superhero. Originally something of an afterthought who might just be the hallucination of a drowned boy, he soon grew up. Next, he became a crazy farmer, and then a hockey-masked stalker, before dying and coming back as a worm-faced zombie with mad weapon skills. Finally he went to both outer space and Hell. Experience all twelve of his inconsistent, ever-evolving adventures with newer powers in this deluxe set that’s a must for any fan.

Ex Machina [4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray]

$7.99

Prior to playing Poe and Hux in the new Star Wars movies, Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac played duelling geniuses being manipulated by the sexy female AI they’re testing. Though it won an Oscar for visual effects, the movie’s best remembered for making Alicia Vikander unforgettable. Her Ava is the true star with or without effects, effortlessly toying with the audience as much as with the tech-bros onscreen.

Birds of Prey (4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital)

$13.66

The most recent film in the DC movie universe to date, Birds of Prey continues Harley Quinn‘s adventures in a Gotham City that’s now emancipated from the usual Batman-Joker battles. Into that void steps narcissistic crimelord Black Mask, whose abusive tactics ultimately makes him a target of Harley, Huntress, Black Canary, and Renee Montoya. Worth watching mostly for Margot Robbie continuing to enjoy the hell out of her newly empowered heroine.

Hellraiser [Blu-ray]

$19.99

Prepare for the upcoming new TV series with Arrow video’s definitive edition of the original S&M horror fantasy. Opening a magic puzzle box gives the user access to an alternate dimension, where the demented Cenobites unlock new levels of pleasure and pain. Loaded with featurettes and two Clive Barker commentaries, this disc features so many extras only a Pinhead would pass it up.

TOTAL RECALL 30TH ANNIVERSARY 4K + BD + DGTL

$14.99

“If am not me, who da hell am I?” Arnold Schwarzenegger gets his ass to Mars in this Paul Verhoeven sci-fi epic that redefined visual effects. Like in his more-often-mentioned Robocop and Starship Troopers, Verhoeven uses the future to satirize the present, with commercial exploitation taking over Martian colonies and even our own memories. On the commentary track, meanwhile, Schwarzenegger hilariously points out all the most literal and obvious things we can see for ourselves.

The Fly Collection [Blu-ray]

$59.96

Yes, there are five Fly movies. The original Vincent Price monster movie spawned two sequels, while David Cronenberg’s remake inspired one. With a renewed interest in the eponymous insect thanks to one of its brethren’s cameos in a recent televised debate, this franchise remains buzz-worthy.

Re-Animator (Special Edition) [Blu-ray]

$16.99

Jeffrey Combs first came to our attention in this hilarious gorefest based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft. No tentacle monsters here; just a mad scientist whose glowing green serum can revive the dead…or just parts of them. As usual, Arrow video loads the disc with extras.

Wild at Heart (Collector’s Edition) [Blu-ray]

$17.99

David Lynch’s bizarre, modern take on The Wizard of Oz sends Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern on a wild road trip, pursued by a deranged Willem Dafoe.  Cage pointedly channels Elvis, not for the last time but arguably the greatest.

MOANA 4K

$16.99

The best modern Disney princess, in a Pacific islands fantasy tale about a scorned earth goddess and an arrogant shapeshifter? And it’s now only $16.99 for the UHD? What can we say, except “You’re welcome.”
