On paper, Spider-Man and Superman would seem to have little in common. Both are true heroes, but one generally focuses on the streets while the other fights cosmic menaces. However, a new story in Spider-Man/Superman #1 reveals a shared secret that proves they have a lot more in common than not.

The shared secret is revealed in “Our Kryptonite,” by Brad Meltzer and Pepe Larraz. The opening story of the Spiderman/Superman special finds both heroes trapped in a strange cave. For some reason, the cave seems resistant to their respective powers and Superman can feel himself growing weaker, as if Kryptonite were close by.

While scanning for an exit with his X-Ray vision, Superman spies an old wrist watch in Spider-Man’s utility belt. Spidey is quick to change the subject when the Man of Steel asks about it. However, the truth eventually comes out and reveals some surprising shared ground between the two flagship characters of Marvel and DC.
What bonds Superman and Spider-Man together?
Sometime after their escape, Superman calls upon Spider-Man as Clark Kent. He does this as Peter Parker is visiting his Uncle Ben’s grave on the anniversary of his death. Clark had guessed that the watch was a memento of the person who inspired Peter to become a hero. Peter confirms this and his own investigative skills by noting an oddity in Superman’s costume.

Peter had spied a hidden pocket in Superman’s cape, where he hid Clark Kent’s glasses when he changed. However, Peter also noticed a second pair of glasses. Clark confirmed they belonged to Pa Kent and served as a reminder of the man who taught him right from wrong. This showed that, for all their differences, the two heroes have the same values and heart.
