The DC K.O. event has been full of many exciting battles. However, all of them have been building up to a final fight between Darkseid and a chosen champion called King Omega. The final chapter of the miniseries twisted everything around, with the death of a major villain giving Superman the power to save all reality.

Written by Scott Snyder, with art by Javier Fernández, DC K.O. #5 opened with Lex Luthor preparing to claim the power of King Omega. However, before he could do so, time stopped, and Superman found himself speaking with Doomsday. The early chapters of the event revealed that the monster who famously killed Superman was destined to evolve into the Legion of Super-Heroes villain known as the Time Trapper.
A related storyline in the Superman comics also revealed that Doomsday had a secret destiny. It has been known for some time that Doomsday was created by ancient Kryptonian scientists. However, a record hidden by Superman’s historian mother revealed Doomsday’s purpose: to be the creation-fueled balance to Darkseid’s destructive tyranny. An Alpha to his Omega.

Doomsday said that he could sacrifice his life force to empower Superman. Together, they could rewrite reality to that Superman became the King Omega and challenge Darkseid. This would give Superman the chance to build a better universe according to his own ideals.
How Superman sets up DC Next Level
However, with the battle against Darkseid settled, Superman elected to restore the DC Universe to what it had been. He did this because any world based on the vision of one person, even a paradise, would be a tyranny at its core. He believed that the surest way to refute the ideals of Darkseid and the Omega Force would be a universe born of creative chaos.

This sets up the reality of DC Next Level – the upcoming initiative to revitalize DC Comics. It is, as Superman describes it, a world “of wild beginnings and new starts.” However, even in this brave new world and his moment of defeat, Darkseid promises the future will bring “a Crisis of Absolute proportions.”
DC K.O. #5 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
