Superman: New Version of Classic DC Villain Turns Good

Superman is defined by his morality and his hope in a better tomorrow for everyone. This even applies to his enemies, whom he hopes may reform or inspire others to be better people. This point is driven home in Superman Unlimited #3, where a new version of a classic villain tries to make good on a bad name.

Written by Dan Slott, with art by Rafael Albuquerque, Superman Unlimited #3 is titled “Good Boy.” At first this seems to be because the story involves a day in the life of Krypto the Superdog. However, it soon becomes apparent that the “good boy” title also applies to another character.

In the course of his day, Krypto catches the scent of Winslow Schott, aka Toyman. Remembering the longtime enemy of his owner, Krypto flies off to confront the supervillain. Soon enough, he and Superman are tangling with a giant robot powered by a Kryptonite engine at the Metropolis Science Expo. However, there is more to the giant transforming robot than meets the eye.

New Toyman is a robotic Pinocchio and “good boy”

Superman isn’t surprised when a diminutive figure emerges wearing the plastic doll mask sometimes favored by Winslow Schott. However, the apparent Toyman claims that he is not Winslow Schott. He does admit to being Scott’s “son” – a literal toy man made of clockwork and plastic. Krypto’s nose detected their connection, but the new Toyman only wanted to help people with his inventions and be free of his maker’s evil influence.

The situation was resolved peacefully, with the new Toyman confirming his good intentions to Superman. He had hoped to show Kryptonite’s potential as a harmless power source when proper sealed. However, to make amends for the confusion, he rewards Krypto for his diligence by building him some custom dog toys.

Superman Unlimited #3 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
