The Justice Society boasts one of the most expansive rosters in all of comics. Despite this, the team is still seeking new blood in the current JSA series. That search leads them to a legendary figure. What’s more, it reveals the stunning secret of their true identity.
Justice Society of America #9 by Geoff Johns and Mikel Janin continues the on-going expansion of the core team. Their most recent efforts involved trying to reform various villains and anti-heroes, like Ruby and Icicle. This led them to acquire the unexpected assistance of a hero called The Legionnaire, who also asked to be considered for induction into the team.
The Legionnaire was said to have appeared to several of the Justice Society founders in the teams’ early days. He disappeared just as mysteriously as he appeared in the modern day. This was somewhat explained by the fact that he wore a ring belonging to the 31st century Legion of Superheroes.
The Legionnaire confirmed that he was a time traveler from the future. More, he said that he came from a potential future, like the current Huntress, Helena Wayne. This was what prompted him to seek out the 21st century Justice Society, hoping they would give him the chance the Legion wouldn’t. It was then that the Legionnaire removed his mask, revealing himself to be a young version of the wizard Mordru.
Who is the Justice Society Villain Mordru?
Mordru first appeared in Adventure Comics #369 in June 1968. Originally know as Mordru the Merciless, he was an evil wizard who sought to conquer the universe of the 31st century. Later stories established that he had existed for centuries and was one of the Lords of Chaos. In addition to the Legion of Super-Heroes, Mordru fought the Justice Society, Doctor Fate, and Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld.
It is unclear if the Legionnaire Mordru is sincere in his efforts at redemption. However, there seems little reason for him to reveal his identity to the Justice Society if his ultimate goal is treachery. However, it may be impossible for to defy his fate and prevent himself from becoming one of history’s greatest villains.
Justice Society of America #9 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
