The Green Lantern Guy Gardner has a well-deserved reputation for being temperamental. As such, it was unsurprising that he considered quitting the Green Lantern Corps following United Planets’ takeover of the team. However, he was ultimately persuaded to stay after being assigned to a special mission.
Green Lantern #7 by Jeremy Adams and Amancay Nahuelpan opens with a flashback to the first meeting of the United Planets leadership and the Green Lantern Corps. Their decision to banish the Green Lanterns from Sector 2814 and reassign Earth’s Lanterns to other sectors did not go over well. Indeed, Guy Gardner was ready to resign despite pleas that the universe needed the veteran Lanterns. However, Guy changes his mind after being informed that he had been chosen to hunt down the bounty hunter Lobo.
Guy Gardner Has a History With Lobo
Guy Gardner has a long and largely adversarial relationship with Lobo. The two first battled in 1988’s Justice League International #18. It was here that Lobo was contracted by the villain Lord Manga Khan to take out several heroes that had come after him, including Big Barda and Martian Manhunter.
Lobo and Guy came to blows after Big Barda accidentally teleported the Main Man to the Justice League Headquarters. Ironically, this came shortly after a head injury changed Guy Gardner’s personality to a “Nice Guy” persona. Being hit by Lobo restored Guy to his old, disagreeable self, but he was far from grateful.
Later, in the Guy Gardner: Reborn mini-series, Guy tricked Lobo into helping him invade Qward. This was part of a scheme to steal Sinestro’s yellow Power Ring after Guy was forced out of the Green Lantern Corps. However, Guy refused to pay Lobo on the grounds that the ring turned out to be on Oa, not Qward.
Despite this, the two eventually buried the hatchet during Guy’s days as the shapeshifting Warrior. Lobo even gifted Guy the skull of a notorious warlord as a trophy for his bar, Warriors. Given Guy’s eagerness to hunt Lobo, that story appears to no longer be canon and the two are enemies again.
