Mark Waid & Dan Mora Will Relaunch DC’s Batman/Superman Series

Next year, DC’s two most popular heroes will once again share top billing in a brand new series with a superstar creative team at the helm. The publisher has announced (via Polygon) that writer Mark Waid and artist Dan Mora will launch Batman/Superman: World’s Finest in 2022.

According to the official description, the series takes place in the “not-too-distant past,” which explains Mora’s retro designs for the title characters’ costumes. After a “devastating chemical attack” from Metallo sends Superman’s powers into overdrive, the Man of Steel turns to Batman for help. Unfortunately, it sounds like the task at hand may be too much for the Dark Knight to handle on his own. That’s why the two heroes ask the Doom Patrol for an assist.

World’s Finest isn’t scheduled to arrive until next spring. However, readers won’t have to wait that long to get a taste of Waid and Mora’s plans for the series. The creators will preview their work in next month’s Detective Comics #1050. The issue, which drops on January 25, features a backup story that sets up the events to come.

In the meantime, DC has revealed an early look at nine different covers for World’s Finest #1. Two of these covers (both illustrated by Chip Zdarsky) also pay homage to the infamous “Batman slapping Robin” meme. You can view them yourself in the gallery below.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #1 will hit comic shops on March 15, 2022.
