Greg Hildebrandt’s New Red Sonja Cover Homages His Star Wars Poster

In 1977, legendary fantasy artists Greg and Tim Hildebrandt were hired to create a movie poster for the original Star Wars. The Brothers Hildebrandt’s painting has become one of their most famous works. Now, Greg Hildebrandt has created a new Red Sonja cover that pays homage to his earlier piece.

Dynamite Entertainment has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a new edition of Red Sonja #1, which was originally published by Marvel in 1977. The new reprint features “The Blood of the Unicorn,” a story written by Roy Thomas, Clair Noto and Ed Summer, with art by Frank Thorne. However, the cover will feature the newly created Red Sonja homage painting by Hildebrandt.

“I was honored to work with Nicky [Barrucci] and the Dynamite team on this Kickstarter campaign,” said Hildebrandt in a statement. “When they told me it was Red Sonja and explained what they wanted, I really got into the project. It’s fun for me to paint a badass woman with a sword. Then seeing the final product and what they are doing with the various covers made it a complete package for the fans. My fans and Red Sonja’s fans! Hope you enjoy the art.”

There are also variants of the cover available in the campaign, including a “virgin cover” [that’s the term for a cover without logos], a reproduction of the original pencils, and a “retro edition” that evokes the comics of that error. Additionally, lithographs of the Red Sonja painting and copies Hildebrandt’s book, The Tolkien Years of the Brothers Hildebrandt, will be available for different pledge levels.

As of press time, the campaign has far surpassed its original goal with $33,000. It will run through December 31, and you can find more info here.
