Shang-Chi Star Simu Liu Is Proud of Representing Canada in the MCU

Now that the Simu Liu has been cast as Shang-Chi for the upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the actor feels ready to let the Marvel fans discover a little bit more about him. One thing is sure: Liu is proud of his diversity, and he is proud of being… Canadian! And he confessed all his pride in a recent interview with The Beaverton, a Canadian news satire series.

“Ever since I was a small, jacked child, I knew I always wanted to be a superhero,” he confessed. “But I never saw anybody like me on screen. It feels great to finally represent my people on the big stage. Canadians.”

“That’s right, I’m the very first Canadian lead of their very own Marvel Cinematic Universe film,” he said. “Maybe even any film; I haven’t checked.”

Actually, Liu has done a bit of research, and shortly after he listed a couple of Canadian actresses. After all, Rachel McAdams (Christine Palmer in Doctor Strange) and Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill in The Avengers) have already played their “smaller roles” in the MCU. Interesting enough, he forgot to mention Ryan Reynolds, expected to reprise his role of Deadpool under the Marvel banner in the future.

“American heroes always rush into conflict head-first, but where’s that classic Canadian passive-aggression? A Canadian superhero should stop crime the old-fashioned way: by using their martial arts prowess to save New York by creating an unstoppable socialized healthcare system,” he further added. “And Shang-Chi doesn’t have any crazy gadgets like Tony Stark or Spider-Man. Just like any other Canadian, he gets by with a simple $70 a month cellphone plan.”

Eventually, he joked there might even be a “Canadian Captain America” in the MCU one day.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will arrive in theaters on February 12, 2021. Are you happy with the Shang-Chi casting? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
