The question of which Marvel superheroes might beat DC superheroes in a fight (and vice versa) is a frequent subject of fan debates. Official crossovers settling these questions are few and far between, but one such battle was quietly snuck into the background of Spider-Man/Superman #1. This fight, however, was entirely played for laughs.

The fight played out in “Our Kryptonite” by Brad Meltzer and Pepe Larraz. The chief conflict of the Marvel/DC story involved a partnership between Green Goblin and Lex Luthor to take out their respective archenemies. Unsurprisingly, good triumphed in the end, but the fighting was not yet over.
What is the surprise Marvel/DC fight?
Later, Clark Kent met with with Peter Parker at Uncle Ben’s grave on the anniversary of his death. The two discuss how they both keep a memento of their foster fathers in their costumes. They also jokingly discuss which of their adoptive mothers might win a fight. Loyal sons though they are, however, they each insist that their mother would win.

The punchline pays off at the issue’s end, when the Parkers and Kents meet for dinner at the Kent Farm. Several panels form a montage of a most enjoyable evening. However, one of them clearly shows Ma Kent and Aunt May arm-wrestling, apparently having been informed of their foster sons’ discussion.

Sadly, those who honestly wish an answer to the Maybelle Parker vs Martha Kent question are bound to be disappointed. The comic does not make clear who won the arm wrestling contest. However, the debate is sure to rage on in comics shops and fan forums around the world.
