Randy McKinnon Will Write Warner Bros.’ Static Shock Movie

The producers behind Warner Bros. and DC’s Static Shock have finally secured a writer to pen Virgil Hawkins’ live-action debut. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Randy McKinnon will write the studios’ upcoming film starring the Milestone Media hero.

Filmmaker Reginald Hudlin originally teased plans for a Static Shock movie during DC’s FanDome event last August. The project picked up some extra momentum last fall when Michael B. Jordan joined the film as a producer through his Outlier Society banner. In addition to producing the film, Hudlin is also helping to bring Virgil’s electrifying alter-ego back to the comics. Later this year, Milestone will relaunch the Dakotaverse with a digital-first Static series penned by Hudlin. He’s also working with artist Kyle Baker on an original Static graphic novel.

McKinnon previously collaborated with Hudlin as the writer of the Disney+ original movie Safety, which Hudlin directed. He also worked on the short-lived Netflix series Chambers and Grand Army. McKinnon is currently developing an original sports thriller series, Wild Rabbit, for Hulu. He’s also attached to write Notes from a Young Black Chef, based on Kwame Onwuachi’s memoir.

Warner Bros. hasn’t shared a release window for Static Shock. However, DC Films president Walter Hamada has suggested that the film could go straight to HBO Max in the future. The movie will also be the first entry in a planned cinematic universe focusing on Black superheroes.
