Benioff and Weiss Will Produce an Adaptation of Lovecraft

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ Star Wars trilogy didn’t exactly pan out the way they hoped. Regardless, it hasn’t taken them long to find their next project. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the former Game of Thrones showrunners have signed on to produce and possibly direct Lovecraft. The film will be based on the graphic novel written by Hans Rodionoff and illustrated by Enrique Breccia.

Lovecraft came out through DC’s Vertigo imprint in 2004. The movie will appropriately take place in the 1920s, which is when H.P. Lovecraft published most of his best-known fiction. Apparently, the film will imagine a world where the author’s most terrifying creations existed in real life. As THR notes, audiences can expect plenty of “tentacled monsters.”

Warner Bros. acquired the film rights to Lovecraft three years ago. To write the script, the studio has recruited the team of Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi. The duo previously wrote the live-action Æon Flux film as well as R.I.P.D. and Destroyer. They also co-wrote the 2010 remake of Clash of the Titans and both films in the Ride Along series. Destroyer director Karyn Kusama will executive produce Lovecraft.

Meanwhile, Benioff and Weiss remain contracted to produce exclusive content for Netflix over a period of several years. That deal was announced in August and is also said to be worth about $200 million. It was later reported that Benioff and Weiss’ pact with the streaming service was one of the principal reasons why they backed out of developing their own Star Wars films in October.
