Last week, reports emerged that Tom King’s planned 100-issue run on Batman will come to an end with issue #85. While King’s upcoming Batman/Catwoman miniseries will presumably wrap up his loose ends, he’s got an even bigger assignment on the horizon. According to The Wrap, Warner Bros. has recruited King to co-write Ava DuVernay’s New Gods movie.
DuVernay signed on to direct New Gods back in March 2018, but there’s been little word on the project since then. The series is based upon Jack Kirby’s cosmic epic that he wrote and illustrated for DC in 1971. Kirby greatly expanded the DC Universe by introducing the Fourth World and its large cast of characters. As envisioned by Kirby, New Genesis was home to the heroic New Gods, while Apokolips belongs to Darkseid and his evil followers.

As noted by The Wrap, one of the reasons that King may have gotten this gig is because he wrote the critically acclaimed Mister Miracle 12-issue series; which was illustrated by Mitch Gerads. King and Gerads modernized Mister Miracle and his wife, Big Barda, while adding additional layers to Kirby’s Fourth World. Mister Miracle’s real name is Scott Free, and he’s the son of New Genesis’ ruler, Highfather. As part of a peacekeeping deal, Scott was sent to be raised by Darkseid’s followers on Apokolips. While there, Scott fell in love with Barda, and they escaped Apokolips together. Their story is crucial to the New Gods; which means they will almost certainly be in the movie.
Warner Bros. declined to comment on The Wrap’s report. New Gods is currently without a release date.
