Skybound Discontinues Overkill’s The Walking Dead Video Game

There’s no shortage of video games based on The Walking Dead, but that landscape just got a little less crowded. Via IGN, Robert Kirkman and David Alpert’s Skybound Entertainment has decided to pull the plug on Overkill’s The Walking Dead.

Overkill Studios partnered with Skybound to develop the game in 2014. Starbreeze Studios and 505 Games published Overkill’s The Walking Dead for Microsoft Windows last fall. Upon its release, the game received mixed reviews that took aim at its technical problems. Poor sales also forced Starbreeze to file for reconstruction in December.

A console version for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was originally scheduled for release this month. Last week, 505 posted a tweet saying that the console port was only being postponed. But now, these plans have been scrapped entirely.

Skybound issued a statement clarifying their decision: “As of today, we have terminated our contract with Starbreeze Studios and will discontinue all efforts on Overkill’s The Walking Dead. Our creators and their stories are the core of Skybound, and since 2014 we have worked hard to expand the world of The Walking Dead into an exceptional Co-op Action FPS. We did our best to work with Starbreeze and resolve many issues that we saw with the game, but ultimately Overkill’s The Walking Dead did not meet our standards nor is it the quality that we were promised.”

The statement continued, “We are exceedingly sorry to our fans and share their disappointment in the game. We remain dedicated to providing our fans with the most premium quality content we can offer, and will continue to look for alternative video game options for the IP.”
