Creature Commandos: Frank Grillo Hypes DCU Series, Says Marvel ‘Blew It’

Creature Commandos star Frank Grillo has opened up about starring in the hotly-anticipated DC animated series and about making the jump from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the new DC Universe.

While promoting his upcoming movie Lights Out, the actor was asked during an interview with Moviefone about his upcoming role in the R-rated animated series. Set to be the first project released in James Gunn‘s DCU, Grillo plays Rick Flag Sr., the leader of the Creature Commandos and the father of Rick Flag Jr., whom Joel Kinnaman played in the Suicide Squad films.

Grillo confirmed that he had finished recording for Creature Commandos and that he got to record with his co-stars David Harbour and Maria Bakalova. “I recorded with Harbour, and I may have recorded with Maria. But it’s great,” he shared. “I love James Gunn and Peter Safran and what they’re doing at DC and for the DCU, and these characters are living in all their movies. I’m going to be around for a while, and I wish I could tell you what I have coming up with them, but I can’t. But it’s exciting.”

Frank Grillo previously played Crossbones in the MCU

While Grillo has been acting since 1992, he is perhaps best known around the world for his role as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones in Marvel Studios‘ Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and animated series What If…? (2021). Although the MCU villain was killed off in Civil War, Grillo was brought back to play variants in Endgame and What If…?

With Grillo now playing in the DC sandbox, the actor opened up about his shortlived experience in the MCU, expressing disappointment at how little of a role he had in the beloved shared universe. “I was just with the Russo Brothers, Kevin Feige and Lou D’Esposito, and it’s kind of like, ‘I miss those guys, but you blew it.’ Now we’re going over here.”

Rick Flag Sr. will appear in live-action DCU projects

Grillo also confirmed during his chat with Moviefone that Creature Commandos will premiere on the Max streaming service “around [the] end of the summer, [the] beginning of the fall.” His co-star Sean Gunn recently gave a similar release window during a red carpet interview at the 51st Annual Saturn Awards.

The actor also revealed that he knows when Rick Flag Sr. will make the jump to live-action, although it won’t be in Superman: Legacy. “Yes, I do. Again, in a world filled with great talent, actors, and famous movie stars, I mean what James Gunn and Peter Safran has entrusted in me with this character and with the future of what they’re doing in that company, I’m humbled,” he said.

Creature Commandos is eyeing a fall 2024 premiere on Max.
