Game of Thrones: The Batman 2 Writer Developing Aegon’s Conquest Spin-off

The Batman – Part II co-screenwriter Mattson Tomlin is developing a new Game of Thrones spin-off series for HBO.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO is moving forward with its long-planned Aegon’s Conquest spin-off idea — and is teaming with Tomlin to bring the project to life. The new series would effectively be a direct prequel to House of the Dragon (itself a prequel to HBO’s original Game of Thrones series).

Tomlin previously made uncredited contributions to director Matt Reeves’ 2022 DC film The Batman. He is currently writing the planned sequel alongside Reeves. Tomlin’s other upcoming projects include a film adaptation of Keanu Reeves’ comic book series BRZRKR and an anime series based on the Terminator franchise — both for Netflix.

Aegon’s Conquest is the latest Game of Thrones spin-off to move forward at HBO

Based on the A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels by George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones premiered on HBO in 2011. The fantasy drama ran for eight seasons through 2019. House of the Dragon, a prequel/spin-off series set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, premiered on HBO and HBO Max (now called Max) in 2022. A second season is due to arrive this summer.

HBO is also moving forward with another spin-off titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. Based on Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, the series enters production later this year. Notably, a number of other Game of Thrones spin-offs have been in varying stages of development over the years, though only a select few have gotten the green light (with some even being scrapped outright).

As for Tomlin’s Aegon’s Conquest series, one source familiar with the project described it as taking a “bag to basics” approach to Martin’s mythos. HBO first floated the idea for such a series early last year.
