Avatar: The Last Airbender, the live-action adaptation of the beloved cartoon coming to Netflix, has released six new still images — which include first looks at some important supporting characters, as well as Gordon Cormier’s Aang himself.
Netflix shared the stills, shown below, in a press release to celebrate the Winter Solstice. One snowy image highlights the polar background of the Water Tribe, where Aang will meet his friends Katara and Sokka, and centers on the siblings’ grandmother, played by Casey Camp-Horinket.
Sebastian Amoruso makes his debut as Jet in another photo, while Danny Pudi enters as a character known only as The Mechanist. June, played by Arden Cho, is shown riding a wolflike creature which may be one of the many fantastical hybrid species of the Avatar universe.
Aang’s still image shows him deep in meditation in a dark forest. Maria Zhang as Suki shares her latest image with Tamlyn Tomita, who will be playing Mayor Yukari.
Netflix brings Avatar: The Last Airbender into live action
Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender will retell the story of the 2005 animated fantasy show of the same name, which originally ran on Nickelodeon for three seasons. Set in a world where some are born with elemental “bending” powers tied to their homelands, the story begins with the Fire Nation declaring war and throwing the world out of balance. The young airbender Aang, newly revived after being frozen in an iceberg for one hundred years, may be able to restore peace, if he can embrace his ability as this generation’s Avatar to bend all four elements.
The original series has inspired a canon sequel series titled Avatar: The Legend of Korra, as well as a live-action movie, a line of comics and novels, video games, and merchandise. Multiple animated movies are now in the works in addition to Netflix’s adaptation.
In the live-action series, Cormier stars as Aang, with Katara and Sokka respectively played by Kiawentiio and Ian Ousley. Key players from the Fire Nation include Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as General Iroh, Elizabeth Yu as Princess Azula, Ken Leung as Zhao, and Dallas Liu as Prince Zuko. The cast also includes Yvonne Chapman as Avatar Kyoshi, Amber Midthunder as Princess Yue, Momona Tamada as Ty Lee, Thalia Tran as Mai, Utkarsh Ambudkar as King Bumi, and James Sie, reprising his voice role as the Cabbage Merchant from the original.
Avatar: The Last Airbender premieres November 22, 2024 on Netflix.
