Daredevil: Born Again Taps Punisher Writer as New Showrunner, Adds Loki Directors

Marvel Studios‘ upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again has found a new showrunner and new directors amid its ongoing creative overhaul.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dario Scardapane will serve as showrunner on Daredevil: Born Again. Scardapane previously served as an executive producer on both seasons of Marvel’s The Punisher, a spin-off of the Netflix original series Marvel’s Daredevil. Scardapane also wrote four episodes of the Jon Bernthal-led Netflix series. His other credits include the Prime Video series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and NBC’s State of Affairs.

Meanwhile, the directing duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have been tapped to helm the remaining episodes of Born Again Season 1. Benson and Moorhead are no strangers to Marvel Studios’ Disney+ shows. They helmed four of the six episodes of the ongoing second season of Loki. Benson and Moorhead also previously helmed two episodes of Moon Knight. Their other directing credits include films like Resolution, V/H/S: Viral, and After Midnight.

The development and production of Daredevil: Born Again

At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced Daredevil: Born Again as part of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Disney+ series stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, who reprise their roles as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, respectively, from Netflix’s Daredevil.

Born Again’s first season will consist of 18 episodes. The series was originally slated to premiere on Disney+ in spring 2024. Production got underway in New York City earlier this year. However, the since-concluded Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike and still ongoing Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) strike put things on pause.

Upon reviewing the footage that was shot, Marvel executives opted to go in a different direction with the series. The studio quietly parted ways with original showrunners Chris Ord and Matt Corman (though the two remain attached to the project as executive producers). Reportedly, Marvel wants Born Again to hew closer to Netflix shows like Daredevil and The Punisher.

According to THR, the studio will keep some of the scenes and episodes that have already been shot, though “other serialized elements will be injected.” furthermore, Scardapane will incorporate what’s already been shot while writing new episodes and scenes.
