The omens are looking good for Prime Video to grant a third and final season to Good Omens — but it will continue without Douglas Mackinnon, who was a showrunner for the first two seasons alongside series creator Neil Gaiman.
According to Deadline, Good Omens Season 3 is “looking good,” but Mackinnon has departed the comedic fantasy drama. “I’m not involved with [Good Omens] anymore,” the co-showrunner, executive producer, and director announced in a comment thread on Instagram. Gaiman commented on the matter in a Bluesky post. “Douglas has moved on to other projects,” he wrote.
However, Gaiman also posted to Tumblr with a hopeful update for the show’s renewal, and costume designer Kate Carin dropped another hint on Instagram.
Good Omens goes beyond its source material
Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch is a fantasy novel by Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett. The book is about an angel and demon who team up to prevent the end of the world, going against their respective orders from Heaven and Hell. In 2019, the book was adapted into Prime Video’s popular live-action series, starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant as lead characters Aziraphale and Crowley, respectively.
Season 1 covered the events of the entire book, but Sheen and Tennant returned for a second season, which premiered in 2023. The new episodes continued the story under Gaiman’s supervision and confirmed a romantic aspect to the relationship between Aziraphale and Crowley. According to the author, the potential third season will finish adapting the unpublished ideas that he and Pratchett had discussed before the latter’s death in 2015. No fourth season is planned.
Good Omens Seasons 1 and 2, each consisting of six episodes, are available to stream now on Prime Video. An official confirmation of Season 3, or a release window, has not been announced.
