Marvel’s latest series, Ms. Marvel, features a hero who is thrilled to finally have powers. But Disney+’s upcoming She-Hulk: Attorney at Law series will introduce a new heroine who is decidedly less enthusiastic about her own superhuman abilities. The show will mark the live-action debut of Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany), a mild-mannered lawyer who suddenly develops a gamma-irradiated persona much like that of her famous cousin, Bruce Banner. But even though she shares a power set with an established MCU heavyweight, Maslany insists that their characters couldn’t be more different from each other. While speaking with Empire, the actress discussed how Jennifer/She-Hulk will stand out not only among Marvel’s superhero pantheon, but amid the superhero genre as a whole.
We still don’t know how closely the series will stick to Jennifer’s comic book origin, which saw Bruce donating blood to his cousin after she was almost murdered. Regardless, she definitely won’t be happy about her newfound transformation. According to Maslany, Jennifer’s unwillingness to join the hero biz right away is what drives her story forward.
“She really is the antithesis of most superhero narratives,” explained Maslany. “There’s this great element of denial in her that’s relatable. For me, it was about rejecting what’s happened for as long as I could, as that’s what causes the fun tension between Jennifer and She-Hulk.”
As the “Attorney at Law” subtitle suggests, Jennifer’s courtroom battles will play just as big of a role on the show as her battles against supervillains like Titania and Abomination. In fact, it sounds like this is her preferred arena for putting criminals behind bars.

“She’s in a career that’s male-dominated and incredibly vicious and hierarchal,” continued Maslany. “When she’s heading this superhuman firm, that’s where we get some really fun characters that she’s either defending or in opposition of. It’s like this really absurd take on a legal show.”
Maslany also discussed how she got into character for the series. Hitting it off with Mark Ruffalo was a big help. But beyond this, she found inspiration from the world of pop music as well.
“I always come back to Sophie, who’s this amazing trans artist who unfortunately died last year,” revealed Maslany. “What I love about Sophie’s music is this combo of organic and electrical, industrial-type sounds that felt connected to She-Hulk.”
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law will premiere on Disney+ on August 17.
