Disney+ Lines Up a Creative Team For Marvel’s Wonder Man Series

Late last year, Destin Daniel Cretton signed a deal with Marvel to direct the sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and produce a MCU series for Disney+. At the time, everyone assumed that Cretton’s Marvel series would be a spinoff from Shang-Chi. However, The Hollywood Reporter has broken the story that the show will actually feature Simon Williams, the hero known as Wonder Man.

Wonder Man was created in 1964 by Stan Lee and artists Jack Kirby and Don Heck as a one-time Avengers villain. Simon Williams was a disgraced business executive who made a deal with the Masters of Evil to gain super powers and join the Avengers with the goal of betraying them from within. However, Simon ultimately sided with the Avengers even though he knew it would cost him his life. Simon “died,” but no one ever really dies in comics. He was resurrected in the ’70s and he become a member of the Avengers.

Simon’s powers include flight, strength, enhanced vision and senses, as well as superhuman speed, energy manipulation. Despite the name, he has no connections to DC’s Wonder Woman. Wonder Man is also one of the rare comic heroes to embrace life as an actor and stuntman. Additionally, he was one of the co-founding members of the West Coast Avengers in the ’80s.

According to THR, former Community scribe Andrew Guest will serve as the head writer and executive produce Wonder Man with Cretton, Guest was previously a consulting producer on Marvel’s Hawkeye series. He also wrote the film Marry Me, and he had a stint on 30 Rock.

Cretton will reportedly be in line to potentially direct multiple episodes of the series. He is also currently working on Disney+’s adaptation of American Born Chinese. Given the fact that Marvel already has multiple live-action series lined up for Disney+, Wonder Man probably won’t premiere until 2024 at the very earliest.
