Percy Jackson and the Olympians Adds Five New Cast Members

Disney’s highly-anticipated Percy Jackson reboot is adding a few recognizable names to its ranks. Now that the core trio of Percy, Grover, and Annabeth has been found, the show’s producers have turned their attention to some of the adults in the room. Variety brings word that Megan Mullally, Jason Mantzoukas, Glynn Turman, Virginia Kull, and Timm Sharp have all booked roles in the upcoming series based on Rick Riordan’s fantasy novels.

Mullally (Will & Grace) has been cast as Alecto, one of three Furies in service to Hades who also disguises herself as Percy’s “strict, irascible math teacher,” Mrs. Dodds. In Riordan’s first book, The Lightning Thief, Hades tasks Alecto with hunting Percy down and killing him. Luckily, Percy receives some much-needed assistance from the instructors at Camp Half-Blood, a training facility for demigods just like him. That includes the camp’s “irritable and sarcastic” director, Dionysus (a.k.a. Mr. D.), as played by Mantzoukas (Invincible).

Turman (The Wire) will also lend a hand to Percy as Chiron, a centaur and trainer of heroes. Before revealing his true nature, Chiron disguises himself as Percy’s Latin teacher, Mr. Brunner. This character was originally played by Pierce Brosnan in 20th Century Fox’s Lightning Thief adaptation in 2010. Anthony Stewart Head (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) later assumed the role for the film’s 2013 sequel, Sea of Monsters.

Kull and Sharp round out these new additions as Percy’s mother, Sally Jackson, and stepfather, Gabe Ugliano, respectively. Sally is described as “loving, protective and selfless,” and knows that one day she must surrender her son to the Gods of Olympus. But Gabe, on the other hand, is “selfish, brash, and combative.”

Unlike the films, the TV show has Riordan’s seal of approval. He is also one of the show’s writers and executive producers. Earlier today, Riordan even shared a new photo from the set, which you can view below. The show is now in production.

Disney+ hasn’t announced a premiere date for Percy Jackson and the Olympians. But a 2023 premiere seems likely.
