Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich may have begun the Stargate franchise with the big-screen movie, but for the TV spinoffs, Robert C. Cooper served as executive producer and co-created two of the series’ spinoffs. All in all, he served as showrunner for 17 seasons. And now he’s directing another series about life on another world, though at ten episodes, it’s a shorter commitment. Per THR, he’ll direct the adaptation of Douglas D. Meredith’s four-part book series Generation Mars.
The book series focuses on the lives of the first children to be born on Mars. By the year 2053, the first Martian, Cas, is 12 years old, and the story follows her and her sister Ori as they grow up in an environment where survival requires work. Meredith wrote the books as an introduction to “hard” science fiction for young readers. Focusing on realism, he refused to talk down to kids when describing scientific concepts. Each of the four books deals with an essential element of survival: Air, Shelter, Water, and Food.

For TV, Generation Mars will be produced by marblemedia and MEZO Entertainment, Cooper’s production banner. Cooper previously served as showrunner for Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.
